This is a phenomenon that has been repeated in 1983, 1987, 1991, 1997 and 2002. It is produced by the falling water in the Atacama Desert, making this arid landscape fill with colors and life in a unique spectacle. You can visit on foot 20 km. from Copiapó.



In all its splendor it is presented in September, since months before it is only green that crowns the birth of the vegetation, which is nothing more than thousands of seeds and bulbs that have survived the dryness of the sector for many years.





Unfortunately this phenomenon only occurs when the rains have been abundant in the region, so we cannot see it every year. In addition, it depends on the area, since it is more abundant in the coastal sectors.



Among the species exhibited on colored carpets are the Pata de Huanaco, Suspiro de Campo, Huilli, Senecio or Velvet, Añañucas and Lirios. They do not coexist, but are delimited by zones.

The Flowery Desert can be accessed between kilometers 780 and 735 of Route 5 North, depending on the time of the visit.

When to go



During the months of July, August, September, October and November.







The Flowering Desert is not only that, they are that together with the growth of all these beautiful species, insects and birds also emerge that remain hidden during the drought, thus generating an ecosystem worthy of admiration.



Among the fauna it is worth mentioning the presence of lizards, birds and the desert vaquita, wasps and coleopterans.
